LAND OF THE GIANTS!

Small in stature they may be, but the Doctor and his 'Granddaughter' Susan must stop an Earth criminal with ambitious designs in this special publicity image for Planet of the Giants, which, though cut down from its original four parts to three, was nonetheless an intriguing idea and also one of the very first story ideas conceived for the series in its genesis days. Highlighting this unique story's superb production design, the image has been colourized to perfection by dedicated and witty WHOvian legend in his own lunchtime, Clayton Hickman.

More colourized Hartnell to enjoy:

WHO ARE YOU CALLING CUDDLY?

On a world gone destructively mad, the environments-popping Cheetah People love some fun when hunting their prey, but their savage impulses quickly take over, in this memorable shot from Survival. Personally, I thought the creature masks and costumes for the monsters looked good then and now, in a story that had the kind of adult primal explorations and concepts not too dissimilar to the Planet of the Apes film series.

ROLL OUT THE BARREL!

Now in the Valeyard-manipulated realms of the Time Lord's Matrix, the Sixth Doctor is soon facing numerous macabre and psychological twisted assaults on his person, in this great image from Episode Twelve of The Trial of a Time Lord.

A DWELLING OF (DANGEROUS) SIMPLICITY!

A trap within a trap awaits the newly regenerated and vulnerable Fifth Doctor, helped (by the caring Tegan and Nyssa) and hindered (by the genius mathematical mind of the captured Adric) in an all-new battle with The Master within the mysterious olde world castle at Castrovalva - a story imaginatively crafted by Christoper H. Bidmead that was 'absolutely splendid' in launching Peter Davison in the title role, captured in this great art by Marshall Tankersley.

WHEN SARAH MET K-9!

'A Girl's Best Friend' indeed as another K-9 variation is given to former Metropolitan journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen, capably holding her starring lead own) as the ultimate present from The Doctor, together investigating a decidedly nasty case of witchcraft from their new home at Morton Harwood. An of its time little tale which could perhaps have been pacier and scarier, K-9 and Company's singular pilot may ultimately have not gone to series back in 1981 but at least its airwaves presence sowed the seeds for the two hugely popular characters return within the modern WHO era mythos by the 2000's.

I, ROBOT!

They've arrived in the nick of time to save the newly regenerated fourth incarnation of The Doctor from a crushing demise, but even faithful UNIT soldiers led by brave Warrant Officer Benton can't fight back against the mighty K-1 robot, now returning back to its masters, in this exciting action image from Terrance Dick's memorable adventure (with a King Kong-esque tribute flavour) kicking off Tom Baker's mighty era: Robot.

TIME FIGHTING!

One of my favourite posed publicity images from the Pertwee WHO era- I just wish this scene had actually been in the episode, as our hero, and new companion Sarah Jane Smith, take on the formidable Sontaran warrior Lynx, as played with relish by the late, great Kevin Lindsay, still the only actor to play the race so chillingly, sardonically and effectively, wearing easily the best monster make-up and mask provided by behind the scenes icon John Friedlander.

Launched with a splendid new title sequence, The Time Warrior was a terrific start to the final season of the Third Doctor's five-year run - a great blend of historical and sci-fi (with lots of witty dialogue) from respected writer Robert Holmes, adeptly showcasing both a new enemy and a fine new companion.

REALM OF THE ROBOTS!

Having followed his friend out into the mysterious and eerie white expanse beyond the TARDIS, Jamie and Zoe are soon captured and conditioned by a bizarre but memorable group of robots (previously seen in an episode of the BBC 2 sci-fi anthology series Out of the Unknown), in this superb colour image from the superbly atmospheric opening episode to Season Six gem, The Mind Robber.

THE GREAT CHASE BEGINS!

Those dastardly Daleks are so fed up with that interfering being known as the Doctor and his human companions they've sent a squad of 'Executioners' out after him through time and space, in the decidedly wacky but good in places six-part runaround that only Terry Nation could have delivered for William Hartnell's second season: The Chase.

Also featuring an excellent but sadly one-off introduction to a new robotic enemy for the Daleks - the Mechonoids - some of the story's best elements are rendered here in this great VHS art of 2003 by Andrew Skilleter.
