'THE WAR GAMES' - IN COLOUR!

Arriving in No Man's Land, our heroes are soon trapped in The War Games.

Last week, our sister site KOOL TV recently celebrated the Fiftieth Anniversary of the finale Patrick Troughton gem, and the final monochrome era adventure, The War Games. Now we thought we'd have some fun on this site showing what the story looked liked in colour photo form, alongside fan colourized imagery (these latter results from the talented Clayton Hickman and others - we salute you!). Unless stated otherwise, the primary on set images seen here were taken by production designer/filmmaker Roger Cheveley, which appeared as part of a comprehensive archive special in Doctor Who Magazine issue 232, November 1995.

LIFE...BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT!

On the thin atmosphere surface of the planet Vortis, the once benign Zarbi creatures and their weapons grub are controlled for evil by the mysterious and lethal power of the Animus, in this great posed publicity still from The Web Planet, certainly a hugely ambitious sci-fi story attempt for its time from writer Bill Strutton, competently directed by Richard Martin. Over the years the story has had some knocking from WHO fans - I agree it would have worked better as a four-parter -  but there's still much to enjoy in it nonetheless, and it's highly original for its time, with some genuinely creepy B/W moments involving the Animus.

COLD JUSTICE!

A shopping centre of frozen goods on a far-off frozen world seems an unlikely place for a treasure hunt, but so's the case for The Doctor and his eager companions (including newcomer Earthling Ace and series returning shady businessman Sabalom Glitz) searching for the mysterious Dragonfire, in Ian Briggs three-part story of the same name- an enjoyable tale whose low budget trappings can be thankfully overlooked thanks to the fine and spirited cast giving their best.

More great story representative art that appeared in the Doctor Who - The Complete History partwork series.

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS!

At first it all seems like some kind of farce, but the Gallifreyan Time Lords' gathered show trial, run by the stern Inquisitor, soon turns sinister, of which the threat to the Sixth Doctor's life becomes even more real. The epic 14-part The Trial of a Time Lord brought the classic series back to TV screens in September 1986 after a long eighteen-months away- once deemed as a budget-saving 'rest' and a backtrack after being officially cancelled - caused via a needless 'creative' decision by new/old BBC executives trying to make their mark, whilst also satiating a few personal grudges along the way, using the still-popular series (whose continued popularity the 'suits' were embarrassed by) as a bruised and battered cancellation weapon in order to bolster their egos and in-house reputations.

Newspaper clipping promotion of the new series starting up.

The season comes to UK Blu-ray, with some very special additions, in September, 2019:

A GLORIOUS 'RESURRECTION'!

Four Dalek shells stand ready for battle on the set of the Earth Prison Station airlock area, during 1983 filming of the action-packed Fifth Doctor 1984 adventure Resurrection of the Daleks, finally coming our way as a novelisation this Summer (18th July, 2019), courtesy of its writer: Eric Saward, for BBC BOOKS. Following on later in the year (14th November) will be Saward's other equally successful Dalek TV tale for Colin Baker's era: Revelation of the Daleks.

AT THE TIME OF ARISING...

Beneath their ominous Tower located on an unknown world of E-space, those blood-sucking former Astronauts turned vampiric slaves to The Great One, the Three who Rule, prepare to sacrifice their Time Lord enemy Romana in a great image from State of Decay.

The story may have been postponed from its originally planned-to-be-made 1977 date until 1980, but you can't keep a good Vampire story down, especially not one from distinguished WHO veteran Terrance Dicks. State of Decay is another gem from Tom Baker's final season.

PERTWEE ASCENDANT!

One of the all-time great series promotional shots from the classic era, as the Third Doctor, at the near-end of his soon celebrated first season, towers above a collection of the series greatest monsters (bar the Daleks who were still in limbo for use until 1971): a sixties cobbled together Cyberman, a Yeti, a barely seen Ice Warrior, and from Pertwee's own era, one of the Martian Ambassador astronauts and a Silurian.

Another great image - presumably part of a Radio Times photo shoot - that also appeared as the cover to an early edition of Doctor Who Monthly - one that certainly grabbed my attention on the newsstand back in the day!

LONDONERS FLEE!

Remember those grim days when there was just a solitary episode existing in the BBC Archives for The Web of Fear? No longer the case thanks to that Indiana Jones of TV collecting, Philip Morris- great job, sir! Anyway, back to that pre-2013 surviving first episode of Web, and what a cracker it was in showing us the potential greatness ahead, especially with the cliffhanger ending of our hero trapped under the Charing Cross tube platform as the returned re-shaped Yeti web gun sprayed the surrounding army explosives. A great moment superbly rendered above in this equally terrific fan art from the rather excellent Tom Connell.

SLEEPING DANGER!

Searching to rescue Barbara from the clutches of the evil slaver El Akir, Ian Chesterton's (aka 'Sir Ian of Jaffa') journey through the searing deserts of Palestine brings betrayal and danger from bandits in this classic moment from the intelligent and very well made historical tale carefully crafted by writer David Whitaker and director par excellence Douglas Camfield: The Crusade.
