THE ATLANTIS POWER BID...

The temptation and promise of greater power and influence over others continues to be The Master's most ingenious psychological weapon for influencing and manipulating his chosen prey, most notably the striking Atlantean beauty Queen Galleia (Ingrid Pitt) during the finale events to the interesting Robert Sloman six-parter ending the series' ninth season, The Time Monster.

A terrific episodic image which I fondly recall seeing a similar shot to within one of Peter Haining's bestselling mid-eighties WHO behind the scenes hardbacks.

FROSTY RELATIONS!

Hidden in one of the store rooms of Brittanicus Base, the newly thawed powerful Ice Warrior leader Varga (the towering Bernard Bresslaw, in a role helping him shake off his comedic Carry On personas) questions an intimidated Victoria, in this classic moment from Brian Hayle's memorable introduction of the Martian warrior inhabitants, whose on screen popularity remains undiminished: The Ice Warriors.

EYE, EYE...!

Within the jungle of the Earth/Refusian space 'ark', the once friendly alien servants/co-habitors, the Monoids, have evolved to become their former masters' dominant and aggressive controllers, in this memorable image from the interesting if not fully successful two stories within a four-parter science fiction tale The Ark, by Paul Erickson and Lesley Scott, part of a third season for the First Doctor that attempted to be more sophisticated and diverse in its storytelling.

GETTING THAT MAXIMUM (BRAIN) POWER!

Looking every bit the glamorous supervillainess, Kate O'Mara channels her post Dynasty calculated sneer as The Rani, in another fun performance as the amoral female Time Lord scientist, this time helping a new Doctor settle into his heroic role against her, in the glossy love-it-or-hate-it Season Twenty-Four opener written by her creators Pip and Jane Baker for the Sylvester McCoy era: Time and the Rani.

AND CUT IT... NOW!

Captured by the Varosian hierarchy, as well as the despicable alien sales man Sil, Peri is forced to watch The Doctor suffer a diabolical desert illusion now seemingly bringing about his demise, in this dramatic image linked to the cliffhanger part one ending to the acclaimed Philip Martin written tale, Vengeance on Varos.

PARADISE DANGERS!

The lush world of Deva Loka may seem like the purest of places, but even there hides darkness and evil, a threat once thought banished but now unleashed through the abilities of an accidental 'dreamer' in The Doctor's 'mouth on legs' companion Tegan. Christopher Bailey's complex sc-fi parable Kinda, in its original 1982 twice-weekly episode transmissions, was certainly unlike anything fan and regular viewers had seen in either Doctor Who or British science fiction television at that time, and was a story commission from departing script editor Christopher H. Bidmead (with input from successors Antony Root and Eric Saward) to savour, what with its rich story, strong characters, great performances (especially from Janet Fielding as the possessed and sexually charged Tegan) and a memorable monster, later successfully realized with an improved CGI makeover: the Mara.

Great art for the story's 90's VHS video release, from Colin Howard.

FROM SWAMP TO STARLINER!

Mistfall has come and the 'giants' have left the swamp, invading the marooned Starliner of the Alzarians (with a little help from a possessed Romana!) in another classic WHO moment, this time from the Season 18 adventure Full Circle, which brought us some fine monster mayhem in the shape of the Marsh Men creatures- surely a wonderful homage to that iconic aquatic Hollywood star, The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

THE MARTIAN CONSPIRACY!

The mystery of the returned Mars Probe 7 and its genuinely unnerving 'astronauts', alongside a human-based conspiracy against an alien race that could lead to an intergalactic version of World War III, are the primary ingredients for the excellent action/adventure The Ambassadors of Death, the third classic story of Jon Pertwee's debut season celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year, and one that. over time, has become more widely regarded for its gritty and adult characters and action, believable space model filming, memorable cliff-hangers, and eerie suspense.

Great art from the Doctor Who - The Complete History partwork series.

NOT VERY METAL MICKEY!

Stuck on a seemingly abandoned rocket heading towards an unknown destination, the Doctor and Jamie encounter a mysterious servo robot patrolling the vessel's interior, and with a mysterious agenda for its silver controllers, in this great publicity image from The Wheel in Space. It was planned that the robot would return for the following Cyberman story, The Invasion, but the idea was ultimately dropped...

The Servo-robot, as seen in impressive animated form.

Having seen such impressive teaser animation last year, let's hope that Wheel gets an animated full-length reality at some point...
