BEWARE THE BATTLE QUEEN OF S'RAX!

Warrior, sorceress and wielder of other dark powers, Queen Morgaine, from an alternate universe where magic and science mix, and where legends are a reality, is a genuine threat to our Earth, as she and her formidable warriors descend here in search of, and revenge against, a fallen King and former love. Thankfully, the planet and our reality in this Battlefield are defended by the seventh Doctor, ever-loyal companion Ace, and his amped-up military friends at UNIT...

It was great to see former WHO companion Jean Marsh back in the Classic Series, within Ben Aaronovitch's enjoyable and underrated action epic of 1989. The actress clearly enjoyed another villainess sorceress-type role too, after prior success on the big screen in the cult classic family adventure movie Willow of a few years earlier.

A CONFESSION OF WHAT?

She was almost strangled to death by a seemingly regeneration deranged The Doctor in his new incarnation with The Twin Dilemma, and it looks like the sixth incarnation's cruel streak would return, seemingly torturing Peri on the water-blasted rocks of Thoros Beta in this memorable and mildly disturbing moment from Parts Five to Eight of Philip Martin's successful The Trial of a Time Lord section (aka Mindwarp).

Of course, as we all know, the worst was yet to come for Peri...

THE BRINGERS OF DEATH!

Ready to deliberately endanger all human life on Earth with their genetically enhanced plague virus, the stranded Terileptil leader (Michael Melia, giving a commanding performance under the unique-for-its-time animatronic head) gives instruction to his beautifully ornate but deadly android (Peter Van Dissel) in the first proper classic adventure for Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor, as then series writing newcomer Eric Saward delivered the viewing goods with a strong ratings-winning adventure capably mixing history and science fiction adventure, and one that helped put WHO back on the eighties must-see-TV map: The Visitation.

IN A BIT OF A PICKLE!

The lush tropical realm of Chloris holds a giant secret and many great natural dangers, as The Doctor and Romana look towards their fallen colleague K-9, inactive and swarmed by Wolfweed creatures, in this great behind the scenes shot of the classy Ealing Studios filming to one of Season 17's underrated highlights, The Creature from the Pit.

INTRODUCING THE UNIT 'FAMILY'!

After the success of his premiere full-colour season, Jon Pertwee cemented his era as the Third Doctor with his successive year, becoming a delighted 'mother hen' of sorts both on screen and off, with the colourful and action-packed birth of the new UNIT 'family' era designed by producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks to win over new audiences, introducing appealing new characters to the show on the side of good (notably Katy Manning as lovably dizzy Jo Grant and Richard Franklin as Captain Mike Yates), and for evil (the sinister new The Master, as played triumphantly by Roger Delgado). Showcasing the new feel for the series was a great publicity shoot specially taken by the Radio Times magazine to promote the 1971 series, of which filming of Terror of the Autons, controversially opening season eight, would begin filming this month back in September, 1970.

Part of the new line-up for the series.

Note The Master's Horsebox TARDIS and the not fully constructed TARDIS police box prop with its bottom flooring step missing.

The scene-stealing The Master is the cover star of the Radio Times, much to the then chagrin of Pertwee.

OUT TO SEA (WEED)!

Victoria's sea legs are surely admirable enough, but the cold waters of the English coast must be quickly navigated by the Doctor, with visual assistance by Jaime, during the memorable TARDIS on water opening to the eerie and menacing drama of Fury from the Deep, out this week in animated reality. Though why the Doctor wasn't then able to redirect the TARDIS to the beach shoreline was never really explained, as I recall.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TARDIS JOURNEYING...

The incident-laden 'Journey to Cathay' begins for our slowly connecting TARDIS 'family', coerced by the explorer Marco Polo into joining him on his soon legendary explorations. Great cover art for the new audio soundtrack release of this superb story, and another fine release from the Demon record label, available from 11th September, 2020.

LIGHT BRINGS DARK!

Truly the worst kind of archivist you could ever encounter, the intergalactic being known only as Light would prove an enigmatic but highly dangerous opponent for the Doctor, as the Time Lord lets the frustrated alien loose amidst the unique characters immersed within the near-asylum-like walls of Gabriel Chase. A controversial performance apparently to fans, nevertheless actor John Hallam brought weight and a sense of odd macabre to Ghost Light's classic weirdness.

LET'S DO THE 'TIMELASH' AGAIN...!

In search of a specific Kontron time crystal to fight the evil of the Borad, The Doctor, with help from Earth human author Herbert (David Chandler) and the heroic Karfellian politician Mykros (Eric Deacon), has no choice but to enter the dreaded Timelash, in the like-it-or-not low budget Season Twenty-Two story of the same name.
