WHEN HARTNELL BOWED OUT...

The coming of the Mondasian Cybermen and the end of the First Doctor's lifecycle combine to make The Tenth Planet an intriguing finale to William Hartnell's groundbreaking three-year run. It's just a shame that illness saw the actor not able to appear in the story's third episode, especially after a great early dramatic speech his Doctor makes against the newly-arrived creatures in the previous installment. Though we have the excellent animated version of the missing last episode, plus the infamous Blue Peter regeneration snippet, to enjoy, the overall aura of the Doctor's first magical regeneration/'rejuvenation' must have been an amazing and never-to-be-forgotten thing to see live on small B/W TV sets back in 1966.

Terrific art by Andrew Skilleter for an aborted BBC VHS release for The Tenth Planet back in the 90's.
