'THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN' WEEK - DAY 5: SERVANTS OF THE GREAT INTELLIGENCE!

A special location posed image of one of the Second Doctor's greatest foes - the Yeti!

Controlled by special globe units in their chest and also via special homing device figurines created by their ethereal controller - the Great Intelligence, the Yeti robots prove a bulky, powerful and murderous instrument for the alien mind's planned takeover of planet Earth, emergent from the heart of the Himalayas.

Special recognition to actors Reg Whitehead, Tony Harwood, Richard Kerley and John Hogan for bringing these creatures to memorable life in difficult and restricting costumes (later deemed rather cuddly during filming and onscreen), especially on location in Wales, where any kind of accident on rocks or slippery surfaces was likely.

Jamie and the monks (including actors David Spenser and Pat Gorman) capture a Yeti during Episode Two. A rare image first printed in Doctor Who Monthly - 1981.

A reactivated Yeti goes on the rampage within the Det-Sen monastery during Episode Four.

The Doctor keeps an eye on a group of Yeti soon acting as escort to the monastery's temporarily possessed Abbot.

The Doctor and Jamie rush away from a Yeti guarding the TARDIS in Episode Four. Superb colourized location image by the66ramblers.

A lone Yeti stands guard of the TARDIS in Episode Four.

The Doctor and Jamie ponder a way to reach the under-watch TARDIS.

On location, Troughton has fun with two of his Yeti chums.

Behind the scenes shot of  Reg Whitehead as the Yeti guarding the TARDIS on location.
