Having been prior humiliated and his plans thwarted by the Doctor over the Key to Time, there was no doubt that the evil, all-domineering force for evil that is the Black Guardian (played with relish by Valentine Dyall) would seek revenge on the Time Lord, finally catching up with him and laying his murderous traps, via his new reluctant acolyte Turlough, across three critical stories over Season Twenty.
