BEWARE THE MARA!

She thought she'd finally been rid of it on Deva Loka, thanks to the Doctor's intervention, but sadly that ancient evil known as the Mara simply buried a part of itself deeper into Tegan Jovanka's psyche than she thought. The creature would return with a vengeance in the acclaimed intellectual sequel by Christopher Bailey to his previous Kinda, Snakedance.

Chilling art representing both the story and another excellent performance of hostile personality takeover by Janet Fielding, courtesy of the ever-talented Phillip James Allison.

HANGING ON BEYOND DOOMSDAY!

At the Pharos Project on Earth, the Doctor, having saved the universe (literally!) now perilously hangs on for dear life to a swinging power cable after his physical confrontation against the now escaping Master. A redone scene, much improved on the original, that made its debut as part of the special edition of Tom Baker's final classic story, Logopolis, for Doctor Who - The Collection: Season Eighteen.

EVOLUTION AND REVOLUTION WITH 'THE MUTANTS'

A monster species with a difference in The Mutants!

Unexpectedly sent as diplomatic couriers by the Time Lords to the troubled world of Solos, the Doctor and Jo are soon caught up in the machinations of the corrupt Earth Governor, the Marshal, and his ongoing attempts to wipe the planet's indigenous population, who have a unique destiny fused with the local Mutant populace that mustn't be imperiled!

Original Radio Times listings.

Season Nine's second foray into outer space is sadly not quite as wholly successful as the earlier The Curse of Peladon, suffering from being overlong at six episodes and with some poor (to put it mildly) supporting guest acting. Nonetheless, Bob Baker and Dave Martin's The Mutants has elements to recommend - an overall interesting story set-up (likely inspired or utilizing a concept from then series producer Barry Letts about alien chrysalis life, for a never made Patrick Troughton story that he'd conceived) with its not very positive nod to British colonialism, great direction from the ever-reliable Christopher Barry, strong location filming (including the famous Chislehurst Caves), interesting monsters development (great design by James Acheson), and a strong guest role for later Star Wars icon Garrick Hagon as the youthful rebel Ky, a hero with a unique difference by story's end...

The corrupt Marshal (Paul Whitsun-Jones) plans murder.

The Doctor and Ky explore the Solosian caves.

Our heroes confer with the mysterious scientist Sondergaard (John Hollis) over ancient Solosian tablets.

The Doctor must aid Skybase technician Jaeger (George Pravda).

Jo and Ky are captured by Solosian warriors at the local transport terminal.

MAKING GREAT LEAPS FORWARD!

The incredible real-life Apollo landing may have been only a few years away, but in the world of TV sci-fi, Doctor Who beat them to it back in 1966 with The Moonbase, as our TARDIS heroes make their giant leaps for mankind (and for fun) on the lunar surface. Behind the scenes at Ealing Film Studios, the leaps were less comfortable for the four actors, having to wear restrictive and pulling harnesses against their bodies.

PRISONER OF THE DALEKS!

An eerie first encounter with the dreaded metal encased inhabitants of Skaro, the Daleks, has proved a nightmare for Ian Chesterton, soon wounded by their disabling energy weapons deep within the confines of their metal-clad alien city. A supreme classic moment from The Daleks, the story that truly launched Doctor Who into a phenomenon

Read the excellent David Whitaker novelisation of the story, which also helped see-in the Target book range of story adaptations from the 1970's onwards, in an an all-new and glorious way, via BBC BOOKS stunningly illustrated Doctor Who and the Daleks large format hardback, featuring superb illustrations by acclaimed UK artist Robert Hack

Let's hope that this isn't just a singular entry and that there's more like this on the future horizon...

OF ANNIVERSARIES AND NOSTALGIA!

In one of the series famous quarries, the Seventh Doctor gets to mingle in all the worst ways with three of his era's great villains, in this terrific posed image used for Marvel Comics lovely 30th Anniversary Doctor Who Magazine Winter Special, which was deliberately styled in the tradition of the Radio Times' previous 10th and 20th Anniversary magazine sell-outs. Glorious nostalgia indeed. The show may sadly have not been making new adventures back in 1993 but Who's superb legacy was nonetheless being well showcased.

SPACE INVADED!

Frontios, deep at the edge of the known universe, is a place of crisis and desperation for the last survivors of human kind, their ship crash-landed, their many people dead or 'disappeared', and all thanks to the machinations and power of the evil Tractator leader known as the Gravis, who has special generation-spanning plans for the people of Earth in their troubled new world!

Great cover art by Andrew Skilleter for the excellent novelisation of Frontios, capably penned by its original writer, Christopher H. Bidmead, and a true highlight story of the Davison era in both iterations.
