Two days on from his Birthday, and with the commencement of his first filming in the title role, 15th April, 1981 saw the debut publicity images of Peter Davison as the new eighties Doctor Who revealed to eager fans through the daily newspapers and weekly magazines, via a fun and very special press photocall taken at Hammersmith Park. Here was a new hero for a new era of the series, and one that would be more youthful, more brashly courageous perhaps, yet also certainly more fallible, than any previous incarnation of the Time Lord then seen in its nineteen-year history. The cricketing image for 'Doctor Five' proved a smart choice of costume design (beating early ideas such as a modern clothes sensibility, and, even more of an absurdity from producer John Nathan-Turner, a polo player's outfit!) that certainly increased and re-enforced the character's unique British-ness as a TV institution.
Welcome to the TARDIS, Peter Davison!
