William Russell, behind the scenes during the filming of The Edge of Destruction. |
I was truly sad to hear yesterday mid-afternoon the news that William Russell (aka Russell Enoch), who so splendidly brought to life the straight-laced yet resourceful and heroic Ian Chesterton, school teacher and unwilling (at first) human travelling companion (alongside Jacqueline Hill as his equally kidnaped friend and fellow teacher Barbara Wright) to the enigmatic first Doctor, had passed away.
Always great to watch onscreen during the show's opening two monochrome seasons, which launched a phenomenon, Russell made Ian Chesterton hugely relatable to audiences both then and now (especially effective in scenes with his TARDIS crewmates and alongside the not always easy to work with William Hartnell), and continued to carve out an equally successful and satisfying character acting career beyond the show, right into his nineties, within all kinds of media avenues. It's just a shame he never made it to the amazing reach of 100, then he would have been the very real equivalent of a fictional Time Lord in long life duration! Regardless, he leaves fans and viewers over sixty years with great memories and performances, and was a kind, considerate and amiable man to all those who met and worked/acted with him.
Gone but never forgotten, he joins the special people of this unique series who will always 'walk in eternity'...
